While I fully stand by the fact that Romney is a #MINO and clearly rejected LDS doctrine concerning the very few political topics in which the LDS church takes a public stand either for or against, it is also evil that the US STATE DEPARTMENT, who is NOT supposed to be campaigning for anyone, let alone #Ohole, is checking out my writings on Mitt Romney and why this Mormon will not vote for him. It is clear that it is Romney, not Newt, who threatens them most. They spent 15 minutes on my site reading the updated 2008 article that I posted a year ago when Romney made it clear he was again running for President.

Democrats to Watch: Any Democrat up for reelection in 2012. From Obama/Biden 2012 on down to the city dog catcher, every Democrat is going to be scrutinized by the electorate. Why they’re the ones to watch is to see how many are willing to be seen with the President and Vice President on the campaign trail. If they shun Obama and Biden, it doesn’t bode well for the reelection chances.

Democrat to Forget: Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. From vapid Congresswoman who says the most stupid and unbelievable things to garner attention to…vapid DNC Chair who says the most stupid and unbelievable things to garner attention. Wasserman-Schultz makes Howard Dean’s leadership look credible.

Republican to Watch: Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney has been skating for the most part this election season, so much so it seems he’s the heir apparent to the Republican nomination in 2012. That’s not the reason to watch him, though. The reason to watch Romney is to see if he’s a Trojan Horse. There are several positions Romney has taken and not quite explained away that should give any Republican voter a reason to pause. If he wins the nomination, Romney may revert to form, leaving the Republicans with a hard sell to more conservatives Republicans and Independents.

Republican to Forget: John Boehner. Over the past year, coal mines have caved in less frequently than the Speaker of the House has. As we move into the next Congressional session, there may be a movement afoot to have Boehner removed as Speaker, and I wouldn’t cry any tears if it were successful. Boehner might, but then again he is the weepy type.

Underreported Story: “Climategate.” What started out with an email stating “hide the decline” has become a major story. Now, the only decline being hidden is the decline in credibility of those who said global warming was “settled science.”

Overreported Story: Astroturf Wall Street. Remember how the media fawned over the TEA Party? Neither do I. To make up for them missing the boat with the TEA Party, they’ve given us wall-to-wall coverage of Astroturf Wall Street (well, except for the violence, drug dealing, prostitution, and anything else negative). I’m sure they’ll get around to cover the TEA Party rallies…eventually, but gosh darn it, they’re just too darn busy whitewashing Astroturf Wall Street to bother with equal coverage.

Unreported Story: The extremism of the “Arab Spring.” For all of the media coverage of the “Arab Spring,” you would think there would be some coverage of just who the protesters were. Except this is the mainstream media we’re talking about here. You know, the same media who vetted Sarah Palin’s daughter’s boyfriend’s mother’s dog groomer’s ex-husband’s mailman’s second cousin, but couldn’t be bothered to look at any direct ties between Barack Obama and Bill Ayers? Anyway, although Time made the protester their People of the Year, the fact is the Arab Spring protesters are more violent, more radical, and more dangerous than we’ve been lead to believe. No matter how many times the media told us “they’re just longing for freedom” the Arab Spring protestors want nothing of the sort. And our media sold us out by not doing even basic reporting on that fact.

Man of the Year: Glenn Beck. When you consider the amount of energy the Left has put into destroying Beck and the number of times Beck has emerged victorious this year, it’s clear he has more influence than his detractors think or claim he does.

R. I. P.: support for Obamacare. It may have been signed into law, but Obamacare has been challenged since then, and in some cases successfully. These challenges have made Obamacare less popular than it once was, even among Democrats who supported it. As the fight drags on, Obamacare becomes an albatross around the necks of Obama and the Democrats, and the poll numbers aren’t looking good for it.

Flash in the Pan: Astroturf Wall Street. For all of its grand proclamations and stated commitment to change the financial industry, Astroturf Wall Street has accomplished…nothing. Unless you count running up a sizable rap sheet an accomplishment, that is.

The Real Deal: scandals within the Obama Administration. Although President Obama has been touted as one of the smartest Presidents we’ve ever had, his Administration has been plagued by scandals, ranging from the relatively minor (Van Jones) to the more serious (Operation Fast and Furious). Far from being a right wing conspiracy, these scandals amount to rank incompetence, serious malfeasance, or both, and they’re not going away anytime soon.

Raw Deal: Scott Walker being “anti-union.” This is another case where the media forgot to do its job and, well, report the news. The actual collective bargaining deal Walker proposed for Wisconsin public workers wasn’t nearly as bad as the pro-union side made it out to be. If anything, the deal was far more pro-union than the pro-union side. Yet, Walker is called anti-union because he wants to keep Wisconsin’s teachers unions from getting laid off due to a lack of funds?

Missed Opportunity: Republicans sticking up for black conservatives under fire. This past year, we’ve seen black Republicans, such as Herman Cain and Allen West, get clobbered in the media and the Democrats for various things. Yet, one group has been conspicuously absent when this has happened: the Republican Party. With Republicans being painted as racist for decades, this past year was a golden opportunity to turn that around and make Democrats and their pals in the media look like hypocrites. Instead, they sat on their hands. Way to bust those stereotypes!

Defining Moment: The “Arab Spring.” The Middle East changed before our eyes this year, and not for the better. As one leader after another was marginalized, weakened, or overthrown completely, it became apparent a more extremist movement was coming to power, one that wouldn’t work and play well with us no matter how much water we would carry for them publicly. George W. Bush made the same mistake with Hamas, and now Barack Obama owns the mistakes in Egypt and Libya, among others. In both cases, these mistakes are mounting up and will eventually come back to haunt us.

Stuck on Stupid: Eric Holder. Barney Fife was a better law enforcement officer than Eric Holder is. Holder’s record as Attorney General has been rife with inconsistency, incompetence, and illegality. And that’s just Operation Fast and Furious!

The Bottom Line Award: Resa Laru Kirkland. Friendship aside, I have known few conservatives as driven and talented as Resa. She has a passion for life and politics that makes others want to try to keep up. Her vision for a conservative media presence in areas where it doesn’t have a strong foothold yet, such as making documentaries, is ambitious to say the least. For being willing to blaze a trail for others to follow and taking on all the stress that comes with it, Resa Laru Kirkland has earned the Bottom Line Award.

The Anna Nicole Smith Lifetime Achievement Award: Arianna Huffington. Take a struggling joke of an online service, combine it with a rich joke of a website editor, and what do you get? An epic fail. But at least Huffington came away with a ton of money for being ineffective and ham-fisted in her management. Way to be a credit to your gender!

The Dan Rather Award for “Excellence” in Media: Ed Schultz. Over the past two years, Ed Schultz has repeatedly put his foot in his mouth, apparently to prevent the truth from getting out. What has gotten out from Schultz is a steady string of ill-advised comments, out and out lies, and insane jealousy against conservatives in the media. Anger management classes would be more helpful to Schultz than giving him a daily and nightly forum from which to preach to an ever-dwindling audience.

The DEE DEE DEE Award: Astroturf Oakland. After coming out against big banks, where does Astroturf Oakland open up an account? Wells Fargo. Way to stick it to The Man, kids!

The “It Looked Better on Paper” Award: AttackWatch. Obama/Biden 2008 had some success with this same concept when it was known as FightTheSmears. The 2011 version, however, has been met with the one thing the Obama campaign hadn’t anticipated: mockery. Conservatives and independents have had a field day “reporting” themselves and others on AttackWatch to the point no one but the diehards take it seriously.

The Padded Resume Award: Chelsea Clinton getting a job with NBC News. Of course, she earned that gig because she did that…wait, it must have been that piece she wrote for…no, wait, it was because she went to college to study...okay, it’s because she’s a Clinton.

The 14:59 Award: All things Kardashian. When Kim Kardashian’s wedding lasted as long as a bad sitcom and had as many laughs, it’s clear the entire Kardashian 15 minutes of fame can’t expire soon enough.

The WTF Moment of 2011: Iran getting nuclear weapons (and, yes, I believe they have them and have had them for a while now), and the world being mostly okay with that.

The With Friends Like These Award: The Obama Administration’s treatment of Israel. Although it’s safe to say President Obama and Israel may not see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues, it’s also safe to say the President’s not exactly a friend of Israel. Whether it’s the ill-conceived pre-1967 borders for Israel as a starting point to Middle East peace or the frequent anti-Israel sentiment coming from Administration officials from Obama on down, it’s clear Israel doesn’t need any more friends like Obama.

The Coincidence? Award: Let’s play connect the dots. The Left wants to expand the number of people who can vote to include the homeless, ex-convicts, and illegal immigrants. A part of this effort includes making it as easy as possible for said potential voters to vote. What’s a major stumbling block to that effort? Requiring those silly little details like proving you’re an actual voter with a real address and that you look like the person you claim to be. So, when states do things to curtail that effort, the Left gets mad and decides to go after those states. And who needs a lot of help to get reelected and has the power to make it tough for states to enact these laws? Why, it’s President Obama! Funny how that works out, isn’t it?

The Pot Kettle Black Award: People who want us to accept Islam without question, but bash Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow for his Christian faith.

...when that SOB Kim Jong Il, whom I've been yammering about since 1994, and his dad Kim Il Sung for 2 years prior to that for you old school types, up and chose THAT moment to die! That's right...we had found out on the evening of December 17 that we were going to go after all, thanks to the best Relief Society President EVER (I will duel to the death anyone who says different!) who drove down and took my youngest and myself with her! And here is a sample of what made it worth that Stir-fried Stalin choosing that moment to die, when I would be gone for a week with practically no internet connection:

My first time in the Rexburg, Idaho LDS Temple where they were married, as it was only dedicated in 2008, and it was beautiful...bawled the whole time, I swear! And now I'm trying to put together their open house in 2 weeks, and I'm waaaayy behind, but as you can see from the pics my baby and my new baby were worth it SO GET OFF MY BACK ABOUT KIM, I'M WORKIN' ON IT!

Besides, what could I possibly say now that all you buttheads haven't already heard, ignored, and mocked? That's right, time for I TOLD YOU SO, only this time, God did it for me! So my predictions are coming, it ain't pretty, and you already had a preview: it was no "coincidence" that they "happened" to launch a couple of missiles off their coast right about the time they were announcing the death of Dear Leader...look up, west coast, look up. IT'S SO UNREASONABLE... IT'S SO KIM!

I think I’ve figured out why most Americans are having such a hard time with the way North Korea behaves. It is because we are a people who seek to reckon the "Why?" of any given equation. After all, it is deep within the human psyche to conquer the questions, to outline things-to make the logical connection between what we don’t know and what we do know. This is the way we live our lives…constantly evaluating and re-evaluating everything to answer the "Why?"

Not so in the Hermit Kingdom.

Kim "No Dong" Il doesn’t seek to answer the "Why?"-he IS the "Why?" To understand this, we need to be-you guessed it-logical and reasonable.

Let’s look at the illogical and unreasonable side of this-Kim. He has postured himself as a mystical, part-Deity figure who controls the winds, waves, and weather. (How he explains the alternating droughts and floods of the past decade is beyond reason and logic-but that’s Kim all over.) He started his life with a lie. Ask any North Korean and they will tell you that he was born on the sacred Mt. Paektu, North Korea-its highest mountain, no less, symbolically very close to heaven-in his father’s anti-Japanese guerilla camp, like some glorious savior born to fight Japanese Imperialism. In fact, the legend goes that so sacred and holy was his birth-so heavenly ordained--that it was marked with a double rainbow and a new star in the sky. (Hmm…rainbows and stars marking the sky? Couldn’t he at least think up something that hasn’t already been done?) Author's note: Kim Il Sung's mother was actually a Christian. It is easy to discern that the whole rainbow-star thing was a message not to the Commies, but to the Judeo/Christian world they have always hated and sought to destroy.

The truth is, he was born under far less glorious and poetic circumstances, in a Soviet Army camp near Khabarovsk, Russia, while his father Kim Il Sung was exiled there. Not very glorious.

Kim is taught in the Myth that is North Korea’s education system to be an intellectually "peerless leader," who extended the noble Juche idea of his father, designing the large Juche tower in Pyongyang, and writing six operas in two years time. While his father-Great Leader-was still alive, the younger Kim was referred to as "Dear One" by his constituency. He was promoted to "Dear Leader" after he assumed the mantle of leadership upon his father’s death in 1994.

The antithesis of this rice-fed heroic image plays out in less flattering tones. In reality, Rocky-and-Bullwinkle-type-"Fearless Leader" Kim is a pompous playboy, ridiculously unattractive yet oddly vain. He perms his hair and wears lifts in his shoes in a desperate attempt to make himself appear <img src="http://www.mtco.com/~ether/images/defaultsky.gif" width=160 height=600>taller and bigger than life. He orders in foreign liquor and foods, has elaborate palaces and playgrounds all for himself, and has even kidnapped women from other lands to service him at various luxurious villas. While his people starve, he has a collection of Rolexes and Daffy Duck cartoons. He floats in enormous yachts and flies in chefs from foreign lands while his people risk everything to escape the revulsion of his Stalin-esque concentration camps.

Kim preaches peace and self defense on the surface, but in reality has been responsible for some of the most horrific terrorist attacks in recent history, such as the 1987 KAL bombing, the 1983 Rangoon bombing attack, and has been the force behind the now infamous nuclear proliferation of his unstable country. He has made alliances with the enemies of America-Islam and China-and has been the biggest exporter of ballistic missiles the world has ever seen. Everything he does defies logic and reason, thus spawning the question: How do you deal logically and reasonably with an illogical and unreasonable nation?

The answer is you don’t.

When God speaks to man, He speaks to them in the language they can understand. We should take a lesson. Kim is a despot whose own nation is so wretched, so backwards, so reminiscent of the evils of Hitler and Stalin that it is hard to comprehend such a place even exists. But then, it was hard to believe the stories coming out of Europe in the 1930’s, too. It didn’t make them any less true. If history has proven anything, it is that Totalitarians only understand one thing--stopping them by force. That is the language they understand. That is logical and reasonable. That is how you deal with them.

And it is more serious and desperate than ever now. The time has come to deal, and deal fast. Not only does Kim possess nuclear weapons-by my own meager investigations, I believe he has between six and eight, not just one or two-but the technology with which to deliver them. The Taepo Dong 2 missile is a year ahead of schedule, and has already been test fired to the CONUS. It hit Alaska. That’s right…Alaska, USA.

For those who are still trying to apply logic and reason to a leader who will never use them, I say this: By logic and reason, why would you say North Korea--a nation destitute and dying--fired a long range missile that hit American soil? Not even Iraq tried that. Before you answer that this is business as usual-North Korea threatening us to give them big bucks-think long and hard. Like Iraq, North Korea is run by an evil Dictator who murders his own people. Unlike Iraq, North Korea has nukes. Like Iraq, North Korea will lie and cover up and buy time for years in order to distract us from the truth and play off our desire to remain in blissful--yet feigned, for we know better--ignorance. Unlike Iraq, North Korea has the means to deliver those nukes.

It is no small coincidence that they chose a part of America that was very isolated and unpopulated. This is chillingly reminiscent of the way you behave when you are about to test a nuclear weapon; oddly enough, logical and reasonable. They also knew that Americans were so distracted and upset over the war in Iraq that the story of the missile hitting the CONUS would be lost--deliberately or innocently--in the news shuffle. Again, logical and reasonable.

It is also logical and reasonable to expect that North Korea will indeed export nuclear weapons to any other country who will use them against America. They are methodically covering their bases. So much so, in fact, that South Korea’s forces are on alert. There are strong indications within the ROK government that they are convinced North Korea will pull an illogical and unreasonable stunt-I mean beyond their normal illogical and unreasonable stuff--in some crazy attempt to force the US to give in to their blackmail. And thank goodness our leaders are making it clear that that ain’t gonna happen. But in the logic of North Korea, this justifies their insanity of backing up the threats with a mushroom cloud this time. After all, no one is more dangerous than a country with absolutely nothing to lose. A wicked man with one nuclear weapon is inherently more dangerous than a good nation with 10,000. And that is what we are facing here.

Come to think of it, maybe it isn’t North Korea who is being illogical and unreasonable. I mean, such behavior is for them normal, in an insane sort of way. I think this time we are being the nonsensical ones. Look at the evidence. They have nukes, they have long range missiles, and they have already fired on America. They have given every logical and reasonable indication of what they are about to do. We are the ones who now appear to be defying logic. We are the ones who appear to be ignoring reason. Kim will lose this battle in the long run, but he will still get his battle, his blaze of glory. It is America, South Korea, and Japan who will merely get the blaze.

Kim's death was announced Monday by state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.\

Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.

The leader, reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine, was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.

The news came as North Korea prepared for a hereditary succession. Kim Jong Il inherited power after his father, revered North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994.

In September 2010, Kim Jong Il unveiled his third son, the twenty-something Kim Jong Un, as his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.

Hollywood’s 9/11 Blind Spot

A Los Angeles Times article recently began by noting that Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, the Tom Hanks post-9/11 film which opens on Christmas, is one of the very few Hollywood productions to try to come to grips with the impact of September 11, 2001 on our national psyche. The piece then went on to ponder the question, “Why so few Sept. 11 films?” and concluded that “the film industry has tiptoed around this national tragedy.” Indeed it has, but not for the reasons suggested in the Times article.
The Times points out that there have been plenty of documentaries about the day and its aftermath, but ten years after the terrorist attacks, only two major feature films — Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center and Paul Greengrass’ United 93 – have specifically dealt with the day in question, and “neither film was a roaring commercial success.”
“If anything,” the article continues, “the film industry has used the tragedy as an excuse to deluge TV and the multiplex with political thrillers focusing on terrorism,” citing Showtime’s series Sleeper Cell and Homeland, the feature film The Kingdom, and the upcoming film by The Hurt Locker filmmakers about the killing of Osama bin Laden. An “excuse” to focus on terrorism? Sept. 11 was not some vague “tragedy”; it was a terrorist attack. The enemy pretty much did that focusing for us. In any case, none of those thrillers exactly set the box office or Nielsen ratings on fire either.
Among the sources offering their thoughts on the topic was novelist Amy Waldman, author of The Submission, a novel about a Muslim architect who wins a contest to design a Ground Zero Memorial. Waldman thinks that Hollywood has steered clear of addressing 9/11 because overexposure of that fateful morning has squeezed out any possibility for imaginative interpretation:

Has any event in history been so visually documented and seen from every possible angle by so many people? There’s not a ton of room for the imagination there.

Really? No room for the imagination? If anything, the attacks have spawned some of the wildest flights of filmmakers’ imaginations – namely, Michael Moore’s fact-challenged Fahrenheit 911 and the even more outlandish Loose Change, which posit that the collapse of the Twin Towers was an inside job carried out by the demonic George W. Bush and his cronies. “No room for the imagination” seems like an, well, unimaginative explanation.

Closer to the truth is film critic Marshall Fine, quoted as saying that 9/11

[has] been covered almost too carefully. [Hollywood’s] been so worried about offending somebody’s sensibilities that they’ve held off. There’s so much caution.

Hollywood has been afraid of offending sensibilities. Where it once led the propaganda charge against the Nazis and Japanese imperialists, Hollywood is now afraid of offending the very Islamists who have declared war on us, because it doesn’t want to incur their violent wrath. It’s even afraid of being called Islamophobic. Hollywood is much more comfortable clinging to the multiculturalist orthodoxy which faults the racist, imperialist, warmongering America and the West for all international conflict.
“The one thing the [9/11 attacks] did do,” says film professor David Irving in the Times,

was open our eyes to this world in the Middle East, and I think a lot of the movies that came out as a result of that, it’s been a way for us to understand why [9/11] happened, because it was not some random act.

Indeed it was not a random act. But ten years after that morning, have the movies that resulted from it been helpful for us “to understand why 9/11 happened”? Or were they merely efforts on the part of left-leaning filmmakers to spread their morally obfuscating, America-loathing, anti-war messages?

One project did indeed strive to help America understand. The article neglects to mention the miniseries The Path to 9/11, a docudrama which drew 27 million viewers on the fifth anniversary of the attacks. A $30+ million project that aired on two September nights in 2006, The Path to 9/11 dramatized the historical thread that connected the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, Islamic attacks on American interests throughout the ‘90s, and the terrorism of that fateful morning in 2001. Drawing upon The 9/11 Commission Report and other reliable sources, it connected the dots for audiences more thoroughly and accurately than any Hollywood project before or since, and had been slated for use as an educational tool in schools across the country.
But Clinton administration alumni, fearful that any portrayal of their flaccid response to the rising tide of Islamic terrorism in the ‘90s would tarnish their legacy, lashed out hard; ABC/Disney never aired that controversial miniseries again and still refuses to release it on DVD due to political reasons (check out the documentary Blocking the Path to 9/11 for the whole outrageous story).
Meanwhile, the bulk of Hollywood’s 9/11-related output supported the left’s narrative that America’s own hegemonic geopolitical meddling, not global jihad, is to blame for Muslim rage. Movies like Syriana with George Clooney, Traitor starring Don Cheadle, and Body of Lies featuring Leonardo DiCaprio all portrayed the CIA as no better than our enemy, and Muslims as victims of Western imperialist greed.
Tied closely to Hollywood’s depiction of the war on terror was its perspective on the war in Iraq. The Times article claims that Hollywood’s seeming reluctance to deal in a meaningful way with 9/11

might have something to do with the lessons learned from the failure of a slew of movies about the Iraq war — audiences would rather not pay to see a film about an event that is too close, too painful or has been too well covered by the media.

In fact, the Times and Hollywood itself remain clueless about the most glaringly obvious reason that slew of flicks failed. It wasn’t because the events are too close or too painful, but because every one of those box office duds – Matt Damon’s The Green Zone, Tom Cruise’s Lions for Lambs, Sean Penn’s Fair Game, In The Valley of Elah, Stop: Loss, Rendition, Redacted, The Hurt Locker and more – every one depicted the war as a Bush administration deception and/or our soldiers as traumatized, walking time bombs.
American audiences rejected that message. They have been repelled by Hollywood’s messages of moral equivalence and flagellating self-guilt, its disrespect and pity toward our warriors, and its refusal to celebrate American values and to take a patriotic stance in our war with Islamic fundamentalists. That’s why Hollywood has spent ten years failing at coming to grips with 9/11 and its aftermath.

Teaching the Anti-Constitution

So my youngest son Cody, who is a Senior at Moses Lake High School, is a budding Chef. He joined the afterschool Culinary Team through SkillsUSA last January, and right off the bat won an alternate spot in the Washington State competition. He has been winning ever since. (Take THAT Charlie Sheen.)

This past summer he helped set up and work at the new Chief Academy Cafe, an off-campus student-run cafe (the only one in the nation) where kids learn how to set up a business, deal with local codes and sanitation, order supplies, wait on customers, cook the food and try recipes, etc. It is a fantastic experience, especially for a young man who has chosen that career path. On top of that, the Cafe makes a tidy profit for the district. Yup, it's a bastion of Free Enterprise at work. Other districts should take note!

The teacher, whom I'll call Mr. F, runs the cafe and teaches the students what they need to know in the restaurant business and the best ways to cook and bake. Cody loved it so much he signed up for the Cafe for his second hour of class as preparation for his final year on the Culinary Team next semester. He's even creating a dish with the help of Mr. F for his big Senior Project.

Creating good food but eating their words

Cody has been struggling to set up his schedule for next semester. He knew he was going to have to cut something, but given his career path, it wasn't going to be the Cafe.

Until today. He told me he wants to drop it next semester, which isn't a problem. The reason for the sudden change of heart, however, most definitely IS.

For the past few days, Cody and a friend, I'll call her "Jane," would talk as they worked about the new campaign within The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that has asked members to create their own profiles on Mormon.org describing themselves and their testimony of the Gospel (mine is linked at the upper left corner of my blog.) They were talking about funny or touching profiles they'd read and about the ones they had compiled. Since they are both LDS they were very excited about the new campaign, which features individual stories, pictures, and even television commercials and YouTube videos. They also covered plans for next year, such as heading to Brigham Young University (BYU), and upcoming Especially For Youth (EFY) classes our church has for teenagers. You know, shared activities and general LDS things that LDS people chat about when they're together.

There were no problems at all...until today.

Mr. F pulled Cody aside today and informed him that while he respected Cody and the Mormon church, there had been people who had complained that they didn't like Cody talking about his religion.

So much for all that respect...

Cody was stunned into silence. It was clear that Mr. F had made up his mind and anything he said would be futile, but he at least tried to explain that the only time anyone else was involved was if THEY approached HIM to ask a question.

"I understand that, but just keep things separate. If they ask a question that requires background information, ask them to see you after class," Mr. F explained.

Cody sighed, but said respectfully, "Fine."

He spent the rest of the day up front while Jane worked on a project in the back kitchen.

Where do I begin? Let's start with "the conversation" between two people with a common belief system.

1. It was a chosen conversation, not forced, and was done while they worked. This is common when people work together...it helps them get to know each other and creates a good bond necessary for a happy and cohesive working environment.

2. It involved commonalities between two people, a tried and true staple of the socialization experience. It is vital in developing humans if they wish to interact among people. It's also sometimes referred to as "small talk;" that's important because all conversations between strangers start with small talk before trust is established and far deeper conversing can begin.

3. Anyone with eyes, ears, and an IQ of at least 60 knew this was a private, AB conversation. The person or persons who chose to eavesdrop knew that they were listening in but that the two involved in said conversation didn't know there was a third party involved. That person, however, DID KNOW he was involved, something the other two didn't know. That bit of knowledge means the responsibility for entering or leaving the conversation rested with the third party, who didn't even have the guts to inform the original two of his uninvited conversation crashing. No, in true Politically Castrated fashion, he then involved a fourth party, Mr. F, who clearly believes that private conversations are now under his jurisdiction. That is how a simple student chat became a liberal gang bang on both Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion.

4. Finally, my son has had to listen all semester to Mr. F's nauseating pontificating on Zero population, Equal Rights Amendment, respecting other cultures (liberal code for "what's good for the goose gets the gander beheaded,") the superiority of walking the middle of the road in life, and constantly reminding the students that "I respect your right to believe in whatever you choose to believe in."

Yeah, I know. I'll wait while you re-assemble your head. My best time thus far is 6 minutes flat; but then, I got my degree in Education 20 years ago. Head explosions at the convoluted mess in education is old hat to me now.

Clearly he stays focused on Cafe-related topics!

Chief Academy Cafe will have one less future chef enrolled next semester, which really upset Cody. It’s a great idea and a successful program, he learned a lot there and enjoyed the opportunity to learn, and the experience has been mostly good...a little grating having to listen to his adviser drone on and on with talking points right out of the Big Red Book of Commie Crap, but then, Cody has had me for a mom. He knows where to put Commie Crap: a quick flush and it's the sewer gator's problem. Ah, who am I kidding? Not even THEY are dumb enough to swallow it.

Another worthy project that makes money for a school AND teaches students how to work for themselves ruined by hippy fagatronics. And all because someone not involed in a private conversation between two Mormons couldn't handle the beliefs of two Mormons engaged in a private conversation they weren't involved in.

How's that tolerance thing working out for ya, Miss Eevz Dropper Buttinksi?

So the moral apparently is, if anyone can hear you, YOU'RE invading THEIR privacy. Welcome to the age of "My beliefs are too delicate to handle overhearing from a distance in hushed tones some other person's beliefs who didn't KNOW I was overhearing from a distance their hushed tones." Hey, makes about as much sense as what happened to my son at school today. Get used to it, it's the new Education camp.

Or for short, Political Castration. Yup, the eunuchs are in charge of your kids now parents. And you thought pedophiles were dangerous.

Capitalism Existing for 1 Percent of Rich Must Go to Ruin: KCNA Commentary

Pyongyang, November 23 (KCNA) -- Working masses' anti-Wall Street protests have continued unabated, shaking the capitalist system down to its roots.

Riot police are hurled to put down the protests but only fell short of blocking the masses' advance.

This has stoked fears among the rulers of the capitalist countries.

This proves capitalism is reactionary system and ailing society where the rich get ever richer and the poor ever poorer as a 1 percent tiny handful of exploiters oppress toiling masses making up 99 percent of the population.

A recent opinion poll conducted in the U.S. showed the majority of Americans voiced resentment against the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor. In the poll jointly conducted by the Washington Post and ABC TV, over 6 out of 10 respondents said the rich-poor gap is widening in economic aspect. The income disparity between the people in the upper brackets of income and the rest of Americans is now all time high since the great depression about 70 years ago.

The income of wealthy people grew about 275 percent for the past 28 years. In 2010 the number of the poor increased by 7 million from 10 years ago.

The widening gap between the 1 percent rich and the 99 percent poor is an inevitable result of the structural contradiction of capitalism.

The history of capitalism is characterized by the accumulation of wealth by monopoly tycoons. In this course a crucial change took place in the relations of class forces, sharpening contradiction and conflict.

In the capitalist society the well-to-do people get ever richer while the poor are reduced to extreme poverty. The rich take to itself products and almost all wealth of the society, wallowing in luxury while the toiling masses languish in hunger and poverty. The people are degenerated, becoming slaves of money and the broad masses suffer from unemployment, hunger and poverty.

It has become frequent occurrences in the capitalist countries for even the middle classes to lose properties due to bankruptcy and unemployment and join the poor.

A big group of the unemployed are in the making in the Western countries bogged by financial and debt crises.

The rulers and monopoly capitalists are talking rhetoric about "class cooperation" and "welfare policy" to calm down the daily worsening socio-class contradiction in the capitalist countries.

Cooperation between the exploiting class and the grassroots people in the capitalist society is sheer sophism little short of a wolf and a sheep living in the same pen as friends.

It is an inevitable process of the historical development that the people intensify their actions to win the right to existence and democracy against the arbitrary practices of the monopoly capitalists.

Chinese Counterfeit Parts in U.S. Military’s Boeing, L3 Aircraft

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Dozens of suspected counterfeit parts have been installed on U.S. defense equipment from Raytheon Co., L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. and Boeing Co., including aircraft deployed to Afghanistan.

The Senate Armed Services Committee found counterfeit parts -- usually from China -- on at least seven aircraft, including the Lockheed Martin Corp. C-130J transport plane, Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and L-3 27J Spartan transport.

“Suspect electronic parts from China were installed on military systems and subsystems that were manufactured by Raytheon Co., L-3 Communications and Boeing,” said the memo from the committee’s staff, released yesterday in advance of a hearing today.

None of the examples were connected to instances of lives lost or dramatic failures causing an aircraft crash, Michigan Senator Carl Levin, the committee chairman, said.

Still, the committee staff has “identified lots of places where, unless that correction was made, there was real fear that those kind of disastrous consequences could take place,” Levin said.

Separately, the Pentagon’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service is investigating approximately 40 cases involving various counterfeit items, Assistant Pentagon Inspector General for Investigative Operations James Ives said in an e-mail. The agency is conducting 225 investigations “involving potentially defective or substandard parts and components,” he said.

“The cases may involve counterfeits or improperly made parts,” Ives said.

Two new L-3 Air Force C-27J Spartans deployed to Afghanistan have displays with suspect parts, according to the committee. L3’s Integrated Systems unit notified the Air Force on Sept. 19 that 38 suspect video memory chips were installed in the display units on eight of the first 11 aircraft delivered.

The L-3 unit that made the displays learned of the suspect memory chips in November 2010, the memo said. The committee traced the chips to Hong Dark Electronic Trade in Shenzhen, China, which also delivered an earlier counterfeit part L-3 discovered in October 2009, it said.

The display units are made by L-3 Communications Display Systems and provide pilots with diagnostic data including engine status, fuel usage, location and warning messages.

The C-27J displays were among more than 500 containing suspect Chinese parts sold to the Air Force, Navy and defense contractors for installation also on C-130J and C-17 transport and Marine Corps CH-46 helicopters, the memo said.

Memory Chip Risks

“Failure of the memory chip could cause a display unit to show a degraded image, lose data or even go blank,” the memo said.

L-3 spokeswoman Jennifer Barton said the company is “reviewing the matter.”

“The fact that defective parts are in aircraft that are deployed in Afghanistan is evidence of the seriousness of the problem,” Levin said in an e-mail to Bloomberg News.

The Senate committee’s investigative staff amassed a database with 1,800 cases of counterfeiting totaling about 1 million parts. It scrutinized 100 cases and found that 70 percent of the suspect parts were traced to Chinese firms, according to the memo.

“Nearly 20 percent of the remaining cases were tracked to the United Kingdom and Canada -- known resale points for counterfeit electronic parts from China,” it said.

Legislation Considered

The panel is considering ways to tighten rules against the counterfeits, Levin told reporters, including requiring the defense contractors to pay for replacing the parts with genuine items.

“There’s a lot of possibilities here,” Levin said. “Right now, there is ambiguity in some of the contracts,” he said. “It depends on some extent as to the wording of the contract, whether it is cost-plus or fixed price,” he said.

Legislation “will force contractors to tell” their subcontractors and their subcontractor’s suppliers that they need to make sure the parts being sold are legitimate, he said.

“If you out the onus on all of our contractors they will get that message back to their suppliers as well,” he said.

SLEEPING GIANT
STAY AWAKE, DAMMIT

One of my favorite icons in history is Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. I was raised with a great love for history by a dad who knew just about every damned thing to do with WWII. In fact, I had to be the only fifth grader who knew that Yamamoto planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. I didn’t stop there; I went on to tell my teacher and class that he was educated in America, warned Japan against fighting us, told them they would lose, was sent out to sea in part because his life was being threatened for daring to say the emperor could be defeated, his personal hero was Abraham Lincoln, and made the famous "Sleeping Giant" quote.

It was a warning we continue to ignore.

There was much about him to admire. He wasn’t just an intelligent man; he was wise and honorable. While studying at Harvard, he was awed by the American people. He could not get over what he called "their unfailing optimism." It was unimaginable to Yamamoto—they were not disciplined with the Bushido code, not part of the superior Japanese race. And yet, they had a sense of hope, a sanguinity that both baffled and inspired him.
He had been taught in Japan that easy living had made Americans soft and lazy. They would never have the disposition to fight a long, hard war…at the first loss of life they would fold. Americans had a silly sentimentality attached to the individual human life. The Japanese believed in never actually dying, and that ending your mortal life in war for the emperor meant eternal exaltation. It also meant that the parents of such a son would be financially compensated. (Hmmmm…sounds familiar.)

Japan had taught their people that Americans paid lip service to freedom being more precious than life, but they didn’t actually mean it. The 1930’s had proven that. America turned a blind eye to what was happening in the hope that it would all just go away; that Hitler would finally be satiated with each new nation he ravaged under the Nazi scythe. They had even ignored Japan’s aggression in Korea and China. This appeared to support the Japanese perception that Americans were just too ductile to take on the hard, disciplined nation of Japan. America had been the only realm that Japan and Germany feared could stop them. But once it became clear that they would do nothing and would actually look the other way, they became a joke to the two predator nations.
Yamamoto didn’t want to align with Germany. He told his Army friends that such an alliance would be death to Japan. When it happened, the heads of Japan’s military machine asked him to plan a first, massive strike on American soil. What he told them stunned the council.

"I can make an attack, and I can assure you of victory for the first 6 to 12 months of the war. But after that, I promise nothing. I also know that you think America is soft, and will not fight a sustained and costly war anymore. Nothing could be further from the truth. If we start this war, we cannot stop at Hawaii or even California…we will have to march on until we are at the steps of the White House. We must follow the Geneva convention in this attack. If we deal with America dishonorably by not first signaling our intentions to them in cutting off negotiations, they will be unmerciful with us, and we will lose."

We all know what happened.

In the hours after the attack, Yamamoto found out that the message had failed to reach the President before the first strike as planned. In America’s eyes, it had been an unprovoked sneak attack. While all around him were celebrating their victory at Pearl, Yamamoto sat in stony silence. Slowly the others noticed, and out of engrained respect, sat to listen to what the great warrior had to say.

"The message did not reach Washington until hours after the attack began. I can think of nothing that would enrage the American people more than an unprovoked attack. I fear all that we have accomplished is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

There it is—the first reference to America being asleep on thejob, and only awakening after being attacked.

All of Yamamoto’s predictions and warnings came to pass. Six months after Pearl, they suffered their first great defeat at Midway. By the first anniversary, the tide had turned. In less than four years, the American "terrible resolve" mushroomed for the entire world to see.

But there is one saying Yamamoto had that I do not agree with. When consulting with his Army friend about negotiating with America, he reminded him that "there is no final word in diplomacy."

This is not true.

When you have an enemy who refuses to acknowledge your right to live as you choose, you only have two word choices—capitulation or war.

Again we have an enemy who believes we cannot win. Unlike Yamamoto, however, they are not men of honor, who believe in following any of the established rules for warfare, let alone human decency. They turn their women and children into combatants—just as the VC did—and then exploit flaws in the American system they so despise to gain wealth, propaganda, and a world that will submit to Islam or taste the point of their spear. They do not warn their own people that they cannot win; instead they use our own people—hippies—on our own soil—Hollywood—to spread their lies and defend their civil rights, ensuring that they can continue in their wicked work until they succeed.

But we are fortunate. We still have those raised in Islam who recognize the evil and abandon it. They see the good things about America and Israel, and the two do not reckon. They choose the one that is right and good. Out of respect and a sense of safety for this land, they sound warnings to us constantly. My Muslim contact is one, but his warnings are many.

"You are under attack, and they will not stop. They will fight in ways you consider horrifying, such as using civilians and children against you. They will sign treaties only to get you to let your guard down. They will never honor a treaty because the Quran teaches it is not a sin to break a promise with the infidel. In fact, it encourages such behavior as an insidious way to weaken and destroy the enemy. In Islam you are taught to be a good neighbor, to attend barbecues, baby-sit for your neighbors, and get them to like you. This will make it harder for them to believe that Muslims are really that bad, thus enabling the goal of Islam and stunting America’s ability or willingness to stop them. It will also make it so you never see it coming—they’ll be at your party one weekend, and when—not if—the call comes, they will slit your child’s throat in front of you the following weekend.

"The Nordic races have been gutted to the point of fracture all over the world, but particularly in America. Your attitude and apparently mandated policy of racism against whites—the race that created and built America—is baffling. Allowing feminist ideals to put your children in the hands of the state from birth on is only ensuring that they will tow the government line and not fight back when the time comes.

"One of the problems I have with the black race is their attitude. (Don’t worry, he can say that. It’s only racist if you’re white.) I have a colleague from Africa who is black, and he is the best scientist I know. But the blacks in America have this outlook of entitlement—that they don’t have to work and sacrifice like the white races have. This is something they continue to do to themselves in spite of their vast opportunities. They don’t have to overcome what my African friend did—their choice of being criminals rather than men of honor is a result of their own attitudes and America’s continued guilt-ridden PC attitude that blacks have to be ‘taken care of.’ How does this help you? It’s insulting, yet blacks endorse it! By now it should be obvious that this policy is destroying you, and yet you continue it.

"Your universities are aiding and abetting the enemy by insisting that America give more visas to foreign students and overlook background checks. Why? Well, partly because they are the bastions of liberalism. But it is also because Americans don’t want to work hard in the un-glamorous and damned difficult fields of science. All of your top scientists in America are either Indian, Muslim, or Chinese. Why aren’t your children doing this? You are constantly being compromised when you have enemy nations creating technology in your land and sending it back home to use against you. They have even stolen from you, but your own press downplays it! How can you be so deliberately suicidal?

"Do any of you know what Mean Time Between Failure means? It is the guaranteed time that a new technology can last before it needs to be replaced. Say that a part is created for the space shuttle that has an MTBF of 2000 hours. In countries that are your enemies, they will make it only to last 1000 hours. I know this is done—I’ve seen it. Do you see how insidious this is? They are not only stealing your technology, but ‘dumbing down’ the products they send you, all in an effort to destroy you. Do you see now? Are you ever going to stop apologizing for defending yourself? Are you ever going to wake up and stop this policy of self-destruction? Why are you doing this? If America is brought down, then Islam and Communism will rule the world. I’ve seen both, which is why America must remain the predominant power in the world."

There’s that phrase again about waking up. I think it’s time that America stop sleeping so much. For a few more moments of rest we are compromising our future. Try getting any sleep then, America!

Stop sleeping, giant. You’re late for school, and you can’t afford that. You’re already behind in your lessons.

Wang Hai, chief of the delegation of veterans of the Chinese People's Volunteers, said:
On October 25 every year, we would recall the days when we took part in the Korean War.

WHAT A DAUGHTER LEARNED, What a Father Taught

As I sit here, January 22, 2006 is fading into history. It is doing so in the normal manner; light begins to dwindle, cool air replaces warm, the sun slips behind a mountain cuing stars to twinkle and the moon to take over. A night like so many others.

Yet it is one I have dreaded to see come and now dolefully bid farewell. It isn’t the day itself that has caused such emotional duality, but what it represents.

It is the one year anniversary of the day we buried my dad, the last of those first anniversary dates that all mourners mark the year after losing a loved one. After tonight, I will no longer lament "A year ago at this time…" Instead I will fall into the verbiage of those long gone: "Back when dad was alive…"

The pain of such a loss has been at times unbearable. This is nothing unique. All of the "If only we’d gotten him to a doctor sooner" or "If only they’d found the problem sooner" that torture the soul of those left behind rip open wounds barely healed over, racking a broken heart with guilt and burdening a spirit with desperate thoughts of turning back the hands of time, if only for a moment.

But my dad deserved better than that. He would be in pain at the thought of my pain, because that is the kind of man he was. I don’t think I ever asked him for help in anything that he didn’t try his best to give, or wish he could if he was incapable of doing anything. His voice was usually tinged with compassion and apology for what he couldn’t do. That always touched me so.

So as this final anniversary ticks away toward finality, I will end it with a more fitting tribute to a man whose life mattered, at least to a daughter who watched, listened, and learned.

Dad was a southern boy, through and through. Raised the redneck way, he loved guns and hunting, swimming holes and alligators, pulling pranks and playing war. Born during the depression and raised during WWII, he first fell in love with the Navy at Jacksonville Beach. The large ships never left him, nor he them. They bred in him a desire for a Navy career, which he attained briefly as a young man.

He was raised by a family who had a strong lineage in southern history. Being raised as a Yankee by him and my mother in the northwest, it was hard for me to fully grasp the fervent southern loyalty of his family. They puzzled me; often hard to understand in speech, even more confusing in their friendly admonition that the south had won the war. Dad had a love/hate thing going on with his heritage. He loved the reunions, the barn dances, the word usage that only another good ol’ boy could possibly understand, boiled peanuts, sugar cane and maple syrup, and fresh watermelon from his grandfather’s farm—but only the heart. The rest went to the hogs. He had a wonderful sense of humor, something I’ve noticed seems far more prevalent among Southerners than Northerners. So full of southern pride, his first words to my mother were, "I hear they teach ya’all up here that the North won the war." Everyone in the south knew "the war" had nothing to do with the one America was currently fighting. So long as a drop of southern blood flows, "the war" will mean what it means even in the middle of Armageddon. It makes me smile every time.

But there were sides of the south that left Dad cold. While he was raised in a family who had owned slaves, fought for the Confederacy, and who raised him to fear "coloreds," parents, cousins, and extended family who said "nigger" with the same ease they said "boy howdy!", he did not like the use of the word, and rarely used it himself unless he was quoting or telling a joke. His family wasn’t necessarily using the word with malice; it was a word used for generations like so many other words, and in the beginning, had validity. In fact, if I listened closely, his families’ rendition of the word sounds far more like "niggra." This makes sense if you know anything of the history of the word.

I once listened to a lecture on the roots of this modern day pariah. There are many who claim its origins are the Latin adjective niger, which means black, but this speaker said it had its roots in something far less formal. Given the normalcy of illiteracy among so many at the genesis of America, it should be no surprise that "niggra" was merely the southern dialect way of pronouncing Nigre, which according to this speaker, was the name of the river where most of the slave ships would pick up their "valuables." When the advertisements for slave sales were posted, it wasn’t unusual for them to note something along the lines of "Fresh from the River Nigre." Hence the southern drawl would speak of these "Niggras" because that is how they thought the word Nigre was pronounced. It doesn’t justify this most hated of all words, it simply tells a curious people how such a thing came about, as with most eventual perversions, in an innocent manner. I don’t know how much of this is true, because the spelling and pronunciation of some of these words have changed since the time she was speaking of, but it certainly sounds plausible.

Regardless of its beginnings, it became a word that meant far more than a ship’s landing point or a race of people. This was a side of southern life that left Dad cold. He remembered the white lines down the middle of the bus, the colored bathrooms and drinking fountains, the whites only restaurants. One story he told me always stood out in my mind. One day at the local five and dime, he was browsing through the toys and candies, fondling a quarter and trying to decide what to buy. The shopkeep waited on a woman, because in the South, etiquette dictated that women are waited on first, then men, and children last. That was just polite, and had been engrained into my dad since birth. Respect for elders was never up for debate.

On this day there were four people waiting their turn: the white woman, a white man, my dad, and a sweet black lady that everyone knew and liked. Of course my dad obediently waited while the adults went before him, but was stunned when after serving the man, the clerk turned to him and said, "Are you ready?"

My dad froze. He turned to look at the black woman he knew. She was his elder and a woman; why wasn’t she being waited on first? He pointed at her, his mouth unable to make the "Ladies first" rule he knew by rote. But the clerk took the small toy from his hand, completely oblivious to the childish, ignorant faux pas. My dad had never seen a child waited on before an adult, and he continued to look at the woman. She must have felt his confusion and seen the red hot shame that was creeping up his neck, because with the class and decorum of a woman who knows what is wrong with the situation but cared more for the feelings of an innocent child, she quietly whispered, "Go on ahead now."

My dad didn’t remember how he got out on the sidewalk, but he always remembered how he felt. This was wrong. The message was loud and clear: woman, then man, then child, and then colored, and something deep inside a boy not yet a double digit age churned with the dull ache of a great rudeness. In that one day he had been taught the double standard, the unspoken hypocrisy of rules for whites and rules for blacks, and he hated it. So when I would come home from school and ask him about Little Rock or Civil Rights or Civil War, he would get quiet and teach me in a way I would never forget.

That didn’t mean he supported everything blacks did. He recognized the wrongs that our society had heaped upon a people simply because they looked different, but that went both ways. Equality, he taught, means you also have the responsibility to accept criticism when it is warranted, and this was an area where blacks have too often dropped the ball. Too many want only the good stuff equality provided, but none of the responsibility for said equality. While he taught me of the evils of enslaving one’s fellow man, he also taught the wrong of the Watts riots, the Black Panthers, Luis Farrakhan, and those who think it’s alright to defile whites but blasphemy to call blacks on such duplicity. He despised bussing because it was a law of force, and as he said, "You can’t legislate love." He felt that forcing people together was more likely a recipe for contention than cohesion, and while he had friends from just about every race on the planet, he was quick to point out that it was by choice, not by force. Force, after all, had been the plan Lucifer put forth before the War in Heaven, and the plan that
God—and the rest of us—soundly rejected. He felt that too many of the hippy generation of blacks were behaving exactly the same despicable way he’d seen too many southern whites behave. Wrong was wrong in his book, and that book was written in both black and white.

Dad knew history and loved it. To get to know him and to get him to like me, I spent multiple Saturdays on our family room floor, watching VICTORY AT SEA and WORLD AT WAR with him. I knew more about WWII by the age of 12 than I did about Andy Gibb. He was constantly reading history books, red marking pen in hand, taking notes and writing in the edges, and the only books he read more than those on WWII were the scriptures. He loved our Father in Heaven with all his heart, and studied Him with a ravenous hunger. This combination of knowledge and love made him the best teacher I’ve ever known.

When I came home from 11^th grade history one day and ranted at him about my humiliation during our Civil War lesson, he wanted to know why. I pointed to the Confederate States of America badge hanging on the wall of our family room. "Kirklands owned slaves and fought for the South. I slide down in my chair in class, hoping that no one in there knows that your family did that!" It was true; I had felt shame at being not just white, but southern.

My dad looked hurt, but in classic style taught me again. "Yes, we owned slaves. Not our finest moment, but not quite the evil it’s made out to be." He showed me a will of his great-great-great grandfather. He turned past the section that divided his land and worldly goods to the pages that referenced his slaves. I read as my ancestor carefully divvied out his slaves to his children. If this was supposed to make me feel better, it had failed miserably.

"Look! Dividing up his slaves like pirate booty!" I could feel my Politically Castrated education rolling to a boil.

"Read more," he said quietly.

I did so. This man was careful with his slaves, stating that they were to be distributed equally among his children, the only conditions being that they were not to be separated from parents or children, and that they were to be treated fairly and kindly as he had always done. I looked at my dad. We’d watched Roots together only a few years earlier, and the horrible scene of Kizzy being taken from Toby had always disturbed us both.

"So he kept the families together and didn’t whip them. He still treated them like possessions."

This time he said nothing, pressing the document toward me yet again. I rolled my teenage eyes and sighed heavily as I read the paragraph before me. "In regard to my favored slave, Big Black Tom," it began.

"Dad!" I cried out. "Big Black Tom??? For crying out loud!" I couldn’t help it; I just had to smile. It was just such a stereotype. Dad had to smile too. He usually found a way to make something uncomfortable into something palatable.

"That’s how they spoke back then. It wasn’t meant to be cruel."

I knew that. I mean, my relatives even referred to me as "boy." It was just how they spoke.

I read on. Big Black Tom was to go to Grandpa’s oldest son, and was to be given a portion of his land for his own inheritance. "He has been my friend all my life, and has been faithful and true. That is why I leave him to you, son, and expect you to both treat him as he deserves and seek out his knowledge, for he will run things better than you can."

My face felt red. This man had been more than Grandpa’s slave; he’d been his friend. It didn’t justify slavery in any way, shape, or form, but it did show a side to the south that I had never, ever seen before. I turned page after page, learning that unlike other slave owners, the Kirklands did not have separate cemeteries for their slaves; they were buried together, master and slave—and apparently, friend and friend. I went to the genealogy box, pulling out papers that showed slaves taking on the Kirkland name, a name from Scotland and exclusively white until it came to America—to southern America.

This was the way my dad often taught me. On one of those documentary Saturdays while watching about John F. Kennedy, I asked my dad if he had been a good President.

"Some people thought so," he quietly replied, going back to watching and learning. While I knew that my dad was no fan of the Kennedys, he always allowed me to choose what I would believe. That meant he would teach me right from wrong, but not propagandize, so that when my moment of truth came, my choice would be just that: my choice.

He always tried to be fair, and loved a good laugh. When he was Deputy Director for Job Corps, he dealt with many troubled inner city black youth, for whom the summer spent fighting fires in Cottonwood, ID was often a last chance. Never once did he refer to them as anything other than young men. He was delighted in the 1970’s when he watched "Smilin’ George" Foreman fight. He loved to tell about the summer that George had spent in Cottonwood, still struggling with who he was and where he was going. I remember mostly how he would grin and say, "Yep, that name fit him. He had a nice smile."

Dad saw the Trinity test on July 16, 1945, as he stepped out into his morning paper route. Even from El Paso, the flash from Alamogordo lit the sky, and was later explained as an "ammunition explosion." He was thrilled when his love for history caused him to find out that he had witnessed this all important moment in history in that brief, child-time instant.

Dad loved deep fried food, hated vegetables, was an avid gun collector, always wanted to be a pilot—even after he gave up being a Navy fighter pilot for his family’s sake—gave up hunting when he had to kill a deer up close and saw big tears roll down its eyes, loved America and its warriors, despised hippies, femmies, and commies, and gladly fought in our first war against communism. He supported the need to hunt so long as you used what you shot, believed the caribou could handle us drilling oil in Alaska, cheered when the nation of Israel was restored to the earth, loved our heritage through Israel’s son Joseph, lost his best friend in Korea, suffered from terrible asthma as a child and breathing problems that dogged him until his death. He hurt me at times, but probably less than I hurt him. Neither of us deserved it, both of us knew better, and I hope we’ve both forgiven and been forgiven. I have no doubt he has.

He cried when he saw the children in Romania, raged at the horror of the Holocaust, and marveled at the birth of each grandchild. He loved the law but hated lawyers. His head was bowed in humble prayer as often as it was flung back with a hearty laugh. He loved TV and reading, spending the bulk of his time in the depths of the History Channel, the Military Channel, A & E, FOX News, the Discovery Channel, and local news. He never missed a daily paper, read every magazine that worked its way into the house, and was reading new books on WWII up until he went into the hospital. He spent his last months waiting on my mother, who was also in the hospital fighting for her life after a diabetic reaction sent her falling down the stairs, shattering her leg and putting her in the hospital from the end of August 2004 until the night before Dad’s funeral. Every day he would go to her side, sitting and reading when she was sleeping, talking and praying with her when she was awake. He did this selflessly as his own health ferociously deteriorated, placing him in the hospital with my mom for the last six weeks of his life. When he was told on January 4, 2005, that there was no hope for recovery, and that he only had a few months to live, he was at peace with it, telling me, "I can’t hold on much longer, but it’s OK; I’m not afraid."

He really wasn’t. He held on for 12 more days, saying final goodbyes to old friends and family. On the morning he died, he waited until my brother showed up to say his goodbyes. Dad waited for the final words from the last of his children to let him go, then sat up, took his oxygen mask off of his face, and quietly died. Seventy years of an extraordinary life ended with little fanfare.

And now I am down to the last hours of this final one year anniversary. It has turned out to be a night like no other. I have smiled and laughed as much as I have cried while writing this; I guess it’s kind of like life. We smile, we laugh, we love, we fight, we pray, we hope, we believe, and eventually, we die. The best we can hope for is that it wasn’t all for naught. Dad’s best will remain just that: best.

On June 29, 1934, Robert Talmage Kirkland was born. On January 16, 2005, Robert Talmage Kirkland died. On January 22, 2005, Robert Talmage Kirkland was laid to rest. And on January 22, 2006, Resa LaRu Kirkland finally let him go. In between all of those dates were the days that really mattered, the days of sharing and learning. What he taught me then I now teach to my sons, knowing someday the cycle of parent and child I experienced with Dad will befall my sons when they say goodbye to me. Teacher to student who becomes teacher to new students. What a wonderful cycle; what a wonderful teacher.

What a wonderful life.

Excerpt: “Next to being one in worshiping God, there is nothing in this world upon which this Church should be more united than in upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States!

“May the appeal of our Lord in His intercessory prayer for unity be realized in our homes, our wards, our stakes, and in our support of the basic principles of our Republic,” said President McKay. (The Instructor, February 1956. p. 34.)

To that I say Amen and Amen.

“...God provided that in this land of liberty, our political allegiance shall run not to individuals, that is, to government officials, no matter how great or how small they may be. Under His plan our allegiance and the only allegiance we owe as citizens or denizens of the United States, runs to our inspired Constitution which God Himself set up. So runs the oath of office of those who participate in government. A certain loyalty we do owe to the office which a man holds, but even here we owe, just by reason of our citizenship, no loyalty to the man himself. In other countries it is to the individual that allegiance runs. This principle of allegiance to the Constitution is basic to our freedom. It is one of the great principles that distinguishes this ‘land of liberty’ from other countries.

“...I wish to say with all the earnestness I possess that when you youth and maidens see any curtailment of these liberties I have named, when you see government invading any of these realms of freedom which we have under our Constitution, you will know that they are putting shackles on your liberty, and that tyranny is creeping upon you, no matter who curtails these liberties or who invades these realms, and no matter what the reason and excuse therefore may be.” (The Improvement Era, 43, [July 1940] 444.)

We all should know by now what President McKay has said about liberty-loving peoples’ greatest responsibility. We’ve heard him tell of our drift toward socialism and communism. We know of his feelings regarding recent tragic decisions of the Supreme Court. We know the Church’s position supporting right to work laws and the Church’s opposition to programs of federal aid to education. These and many more things has President McKay told us that involve the great struggle against state slavery and the anti-Christ. Now, inasmuch as all these warnings have come through the only mouthpiece of the Lord on the earth today there is one major question we should ask ourselves. Assuming we are living a life so we can know, then what does the Holy Spirit have to say about it?

We are under obligation to answer this question. God will hold us responsible...."

Be Not Deceived by Ezra Taft Benson

Humbly and gratefully I approach you today. Humble in the awesome task of speaking to you-grateful for the gospel and a prophet at our head. I concur in this great address on man and free agency given by the Lord’s mouthpiece. President McKay will go down in eternity as one of the great champions of free men.

Years ago my great-grandfather, while an investigator, attended a Mormon meeting during which a member had a quarrel over the Sacrament table with the branch president. When the service was over, Mrs. Benson turned to Ezra T. and asked him what he thought of the Mormons now. I’ll always be grateful for his answer. He said he thought the actions of its members in no way altered the truth of Mormonism. That conviction saved him from many a tragedy. Before joining the Church, Grandfather was moved by a marvelous prayer of Apostle John E. Page.

But later the young convert was greatly shocked by the same man whose actions reflected his gradual apostasy.

Ironically, when Elder Page eventually was excommunicated, Brigham Young selected the young convert to fill Elder Page’s place in the Quorum of the Twelve.

Six of the original Twelve Apostles selected by Joseph Smith were excommunicated. The Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon left the Church. Three of Joseph Smith’s Counselors fell-one even helped plot his death.

A natural question that might arise would be, that if the Lord knew in advance that these men would fall, as he undoubtedly did, why did he have his Prophet call them to such high office? The answer is; to fill the Lord’s purposes. For even the Master followed the will the will of the Father by selecting Judas. President George Q. Cannon suggests an explanation, too, when he states:

“Perhaps it is His own design that faults and weaknesses should appear in high places in order that His Saints may learn to trust in Him and not in any man or men.” (Millennial Star 53:658-659. February 15, 1891.)

And this would parallel Lehi’s warning; put not your “. . . trust in the arm of flesh. . . .” (2 Nephi 4:34.)

“The Church,” says President McKay, “is little, if at all, injured by persecution and calumnies from ignorant, misinformed, or malicious enemies.” (The Instructor, February 1956, p. 33.)

It is from within the Church that the greatest hindrance comes. And so, it seems, it has been. Now the question arises, will we stick with the kingdom and can we avoid being deceived? Certainly this is an important question, for the Lord has said that in the last days the devil will “rage in the hearts of . . . men,” (2 Nephi 28:20) and if it were possible he shall “deceive the very elect.” (See Joseph Smith 1:5-37.)

“The adversary,” said Brigham Young, “presents his principles and arguments in the most approved style, and in the most winning tone, attended with the most graceful attitudes; and he is very careful to ingratiate himself into the favour of the powerful and influential of mankind, uniting himself with popular parties, floating into offices of trust and emolument by pandering to popular feeling, though it should seriously wrong and oppress the innocent. Such characters put on the manners of an angel, appearing as nigh like angels of light as they possibly can, to deceive the innocent and the unwary. The good which they do, they do it to bring to pass an evil purpose upon the good and honest followers of Jesus Christ.” (JD 11, 238-239.)

Those of us who think “. . . all is well in Zion . . .” (2 Nephi 28:21) in spite of Book of Mormon warning might ponder the words of Heber C. Kimball when he said, “Yes, we think we are secure here in the chambers of these everlasting hills . . . but I want to say to you, my brethren, the time is coming when we will be mixed up in these now peaceful valleys to that extent that it will be difficult to tell the face of a Saint from the face of an enemy against the people of God. Then is the time to look out for the great sieve, for there will be a great sifting time, and many will fall. For I say unto you there is a test, a Test, a TEST coming.” (Heber C. Kimball, 1856. Quoted by J. Golden Kimball, Conference Report, October 1930, pp. 59-60.)

One of the greatest discourses that I have ever heard or read on how to avoid being deceived was given from this pulpit during the priesthood session of the October, 1960 semiannual conference by Elder Marion G. Romney. (Ibid., October 1960, 73-75.) I commend it to you for your close study and wish that there were time to reread it. During the talk Elder Romney stated that there was no guarantee that the devil will not deceive a lot of men who hold the priesthood. Then, after referring to a talk on free agency by President McKay, Elder Romney states, “. . . Free agency is the principle against which Satan waged his war in heaven. It is still the front on which he makes his most furious, devious, and persistent attacks. That this would be the case was foreshadowed by the Lord. . . .”

And then after quoting the scripture from the Pearl of Great Price regarding the war in heaven over free agency (Moses 4:1–4) Elder Romney continues:

“You see, at the time he was cast out of heaven, his objective was (and still is) `to deceive and to blind men and to lead them captive at his will.’ This he effectively does to as many as will not hearken unto the voice of God. His main attack is still on free agency. When he can get men to yield their agency, he has them well on the way to captivity.

“We who hold the priesthood must beware concerning ourselves, that we do not fall into the traps he lays to rob us of our freedom. We must be careful that we are not led to accept or support in any way any organization, cause or measure which, in its remotest effect, would jeopardize free agency, whether it be in politics, government, religion, employment, education, or any other field. It is not enough for us to be sincere in what we support. We must be right!”

Elder Romney then outlined some tests to distinguish the true from the counterfeit. Now this is crucial for us to know, for as President [John] Taylor said, “Besides the preaching of the Gospel, we have another mission, namely, the perpetuation of the free agency of man and the maintenance of liberty, freedom, and the rights of man.” (JD 23, 63.)

It was the struggle over free agency that divided us before we came here; it may well be the struggle over the same principle which will deceive and divide us again.

May I suggest three short tests to avoid being deceived, both pertaining to this freedom struggle and all other matters.

1. What do the standard works have to say about it? “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them,” said Isaiah. (Isa. 8:20.) This is one of the great truths of Isaiah so important that it was included in the Book of Mormon scriptures. There it reads: “To the law and to the testimony; and if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (2 Nephi 18:20.) And Hosea said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: . . .” (Hos. 4:6.)

We must diligently study the scriptures. Of special importance to us are the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. Joseph Smith said, “. . . that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” (DHC 4, 461.)

The Book of Mormon, Brigham Young said, was written on the tablets of his heart and no doubt helped save him from being deceived. The Book of Mormon has a lot to say about America freedom, and secret combinations.

The Doctrine and Covenants is important because it contains the revelations which helped lay the foundation of this great latter-day work. It speaks of many things. Section 134, verse 2, states that government should hold inviolate the rights and control of property. This makes important reading in a day when government controls are increasing and people are losing the right to control their own property.

2. The second guide is: what do the latter-day Presidents of the Church have to say on the subject-particularly the living President? President Wilford Woodruff related an instance in church history when Brigham Young was addressing a congregation in the presence of the Prophet Joseph Smith:

“Brother Brigham took the stand, and he took the Bible and laid it down; he took the Book of Mormon, and laid it down: and he took the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and laid it down before him, and he said, `There is the written word of God to us, concerning the work of God from the beginning of the world, almost, to our day.’ `And now,’ said he `when compared with the living oracles, those books are nothing to me; those books do not convey the word of God direct to us now, as do the words of a Prophet or a man bearing the Holy Priesthood in our day and generation. I would rather have the living oracles than all the writing in the books.’ That was the course he pursued. When he was through, Brother Joseph said to the congregation: `Brother Brigham has told you the word of the Lord, and he has told you the truth’. . . .” (Conference Report, October 1897, pp. 18-19.)

There is only one man on the earth today who speaks for the Church. (See D&C 132:7, 21:4.) That man is President David O. McKay. Because he gives the word of the Lord for us today, his words have an even more immediate importance than those of the dead prophets. When speaking under the influence of the Holy Ghost his words are scripture. (See D&C 68:4.) I commend for your reading the masterful discourse of President J. Reuben Clark Jr., in the Church News of July 31, 1954, entitled: “When Are Church Leader’s Words Entitled to Claim of Scripture?”

The President can speak on any subject he feels is needful for the Saints. As Brigham Young has stated: “I defy any man on earth to point out the path a prophet of God should walk in, or point out his duty, and just how far he must go, in dictating temporal or spiritual things. Temporal and spiritual things are inseparably connected, and ever will be.” (JD 10, 364) Other officers in the kingdom have fallen but never the Presidents. Keep your eye on the captain is still good counsel. The words of a living prophet must, and ever will take precedence.

President McKay has said a lot about our tragic trends towards socialism and communism and the responsibilities liberty-loving people have in defending and preserving our Constitution. (See, Conference Report, April 1953, pp. 112-113.) Have we read these words from God’s mouthpiece and pondered on them?

3. The third and final test is the Holy Ghost-the test of the Spirit. By that Spirit we “. . . may know the truth of all things.” (Moroni 10:5.) This test can only be fully effective if one’s channels of communication with God are clean and virtuous and uncluttered with sin. Said Brigham Young:

“You may know whether you are led right or wrong, as well as you know the way home; for every principle God has revealed carries its own convictions of its truth to the human mind, . . .

“What a pity it would be if we were led by one man to utter destruction! Are you afraid of this? I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire of themselves of God whether they are led by Him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken that influence they could give to their leaders did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path that the Lord dictates, or not. This has been my exhortation continually.” (JD 9, 149-150.)

Elder Heber C. Kimball stated: “The time will come when no man or woman will be able to endure on borrowed light.” (Orson F. Whitney, Life of Heber C. Kimball, 1888 edition 461.)

How then can we know if a man is speaking by the spirit? The Bible, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants give us the key. (See D&C 50:17–23; 100:5-8; 2 Nephi 33:1; 1 Cor. 2:10–11.)

President Clark summarized them well when he said:

“We can tell when the speakers are moved upon by the Holy Ghost only when we, ourselves, are moved upon by the Holy Ghost. In a way, this completely shifts the responsibility from them to us to determine when they so speak . . . the Church will know by the testimony of the Holy Ghost in the body of the members, whether the brethren in voicing their views are moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and in due time that knowledge will be made manifest.” (Church News, July 31, 1954.)

Will this Spirit be needed to check actions in other situations? Yes, and it could be used as a guide and a protector for the faithful in a situation described by Elder Lee at the last general priesthood session of the Church when he said:

“In the history of the Church there have been times or instances where Counselors in the First Presidency and others in high station have sought to overturn the decision or to persuade the President contrary to his inspired judgment, and always, if you will read carefully the history of the Church, such oppositions brought not only disastrous results to those who resisted the decision of the President, but almost always such temporary persuasions were called back for reconsideration, or a reversal of hasty action not in accordance with the feelings, the inspired feelings, of the President of the Church. And that, I submit, is one of the fundamental things that we must never lose sight of in the building up of the kingdom of God.” (Conference Report, April, 1963, p. 81.)

These then, are the three tests: The standard works; the inspired words of the Presidents of the Church, particularly the living Presidents; and the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Now, brothers and sisters, in this great struggle for free agency just think what a power for good we could be in this world if we were united. Remember how President Clark used to reiterate in the general priesthood meeting of the Church that there was not a righteous thing in this world that we couldn’t accomplish if we were just united.

And President McKay has reiterated it again and again when he’s stated: “Next to being one in worshiping God, there is nothing in this world upon which this Church should be more united than in upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States!

“May the appeal of our Lord in His intercessory prayer for unity be realized in our homes, our wards, our stakes, and in our support of the basic principles of our Republic,” said President McKay. (The Instructor, February 1956. p. 34.)

To that I say Amen and Amen.

President McKay speaks of a unity on principles. President Clark said:

“God provided that in this land of liberty, our political allegiance shall run not to individuals, that is, to government officials, no matter how great or how small they may be. Under His plan our allegiance and the only allegiance we owe as citizens or denizens of the United States, runs to our inspired Constitution which God Himself set up. So runs the oath of office of those who participate in government. A certain loyalty we do owe to the office which a man holds, but even here we owe, just by reason of our citizenship, no loyalty to the man himself. In other countries it is to the individual that allegiance runs. This principle of allegiance to the Constitution is basic to our freedom. It is one of the great principles that distinguishes this ‘land of liberty’ from other countries.

“Thus God added to His priceless blessings to us.

“I wish to say with all the earnestness I possess that when you youth and maidens see any curtailment of these liberties I have named, when you see government invading any of these realms of freedom which we have under our Constitution, you will know that they are putting shackles on your liberty, and that tyranny is creeping upon you, no matter who curtails these liberties or who invades these realms, and no matter what the reason and excuse therefore may be.” (The Improvement Era, 43, [July 1940] 444.)

We all should know by now what President McKay has said about liberty-loving peoples’ greatest responsibility. We’ve heard him tell of our drift toward socialism and communism. We know of his feelings regarding recent tragic decisions of the Supreme Court. We know the Church’s position supporting right to work laws and the Church’s opposition to programs of federal aid to education. These and many more things has President McKay told us that involve the great struggle against state slavery and the anti-Christ. Now, inasmuch as all these warnings have come through the only mouthpiece of the Lord on the earth today there is one major question we should ask ourselves. Assuming we are living a life so we can know, then what does the Holy Spirit have to say about it?

We are under obligation to answer this question. God will hold us responsible.

Let us not be deceived in the sifting days ahead. Let us rally together on principle behind the prophet as guided by the promptings of the Spirit.

We should continue to speak out for freedom and against socialism and communism as President McKay has consistently admonished us. We should continue to come to the aid of patriots, programs and organizations which are trying to save our Constitution through every legal and moral means possible.

God has not left us in darkness regarding these matters. We have the scriptures ancient and modern. We have a living prophet, and we may obtain the Spirit.

Joseph Smith did see the Father and the Son. The kingdom established through the Prophet’s instrumentality will roll forth.

We can move forward with it.

That we may all do so and be not deceived is my humble prayer. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Goodbye Mom final....

Yes, I am confused too. I was notified on Saturday that my mom was nearing her end. Sunday morning I felt strongly that she needed me to call and tell her "goodbye" and that it was OK to go, which my sons and I did. They told us it wouldn't be long. Low and behold, I wrote my previous "goodbye" to her and listed her death as Sept. 25 on Sunday, only to find out she was still hanging in there. Atta girl mom; she always was physically strong.

But since my family is NOT allowed any contact with me--not even my phone number or mailing address--getting updates was difficult. I was restless and crying today, and figured that Father was preparing me. She passed at 8:30 pm Mountain Daylight Time in Salt Lake City, UT. She will be buried next to my dad in Pocatello, ID. She suffered quite a bit in the years after I moved up here, and in particular after I realized that family had to be cut out of my life. She had been a diabetic for 43 years, a bad one for the last 15 years. It is actually quite amazing she lasted as long as she did. Thanks to everyone for their kind words. It's not an ideal conclusion, but she is not suffering anymore, and she gets to be with dad and go home to Father. Huh...I guess it is an ideal "beginning."
